Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsement of Christina Bohannan and Liz Mathis for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Iowa’s 1st and 2nd Congressional Districts, respectively.
“Iowans are experiencing more and more climate-driven disasters – from more frequent heavy precipitation and floods to droughts and extreme heat – and we need leaders in Congress like Liz Mathis and Christina Bohannan who will fight to protect all communities from the impacts of the climate crisis and prioritize growing Iowa’s clean energy economy,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are thrilled to support these two strong leaders who we know will trust the science and facts and continue to fight for climate, justice, jobs, and a strong democracy for all communities.”
“I am so proud to have the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund,” said State Representative Christina Bohannan. “Iowa’s beautiful waterways, parks, and trails are cherished treasures of our state. I look forward to working with LCV to protect our environment and ensure that our children and grandchildren can enjoy outdoor activities for many years to come.”
“From crop-damaging droughts and derechos to frequent flooding events along our rivers that have wiped out our communities – the science is clear – Iowa is experiencing the destructive effects of climate change,” said State Senator Liz Mathis. “As these weather events become increasingly more extreme each year, it is vital that we take immediate action to address this climate crisis. In Congress, I will work to deliver environmental equity – creating thousands of good-paying jobs along the way. I’m honored to have the support of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund in this work.”
Liz Mathis was born and raised on her family’s farm in DeWitt, Iowa. In 2011, she was nominated by the Iowa Democratic Party to run in a special election for an open state senate seat and was re-elected in 2012, 2016 and 2020. State Senator Mathis is the ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture and Natural Resources and has sponsored many pieces of pro-environment and pro-democracy legislation, including increasing solar energy tax credits, redeveloping brownfields, resolutions in support of creating a national renewable fuel standard, regulating corporate money in politics and more.
Christina Bohannan is a constitutional law professor at the University of Iowa College of Law. She began her career as an environmental engineer working to protect clean water at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. In 2020, she was elected to serve in State House District 85. In the legislature, Rep. Bohannan serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture and Natural Resources. She has sponsored legislation to promote solar energy tax credits, testing for lead in water at schools and childcare facilities, and lead and copper testing in county water systems.
