About the National Environmental Scorecard

For more than 50 years, LCV has published the National Environmental Scorecard to track the voting records of members of Congress. By keeping score, we’re shining a light on leaders’ policy positions and empowering constituents to know if lawmakers are voting to protect their communities and the planet, or not.

Our scorecard provides an objective, factual scoring of the voting records of all members of Congress on legislation in the areas of:

  • climate change
  • democracy
  • spending for environmental programs
  • environmental and racial justice
  • energy
  • public health
  • worker protections
  • public lands
  • wildlife conservation

Each year, experts from environmental, environmental justice, and conservation organizations collectively select the critical votes on which members of Congress are scored. These scores help distinguish which legislators are working for environmental protection.

Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA)

“I’m grateful for the work of the League of Conservation Voters to hold Congress accountable with the 2021 Environmental Scorecard, and I’m proud to have scored a 100%. As we look ahead, we must aim even higher to combat the climate crisis and protect our environment. Congress must pass legislation that propels us toward independence from fossil fuels and accelerates the transition to a green economy while promoting equity and creating good-paying, union jobs. I’m committed to fighting for the transformational agenda we need, and I’m thankful for LCV’s partnership in this fight.”
