Washington, D.C.— In case you missed it, last week, the Conservation Voters Movement (CVM) — the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and our 30+ state affiliates — were in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to participate in various convention panels and events as climate action was featured at the DNC. In addition, the CVM had seven members who served as official convention delegates from their states. See a video with a few of our CVM delegates HERE.
Members of Congress and pro-climate advocates spoke at the DNC Climate and Environmental Council meeting to discuss the urgency of the climate crisis and the stakes for the election this year. LCV Senior Vice President Tiernan Sittenfeld said, “The stakes for our climate, for environmental & racial justice, for our democracy, for our lands & waters, for all that we hold dear has never been higher. The need to make more progress has never been greater.”
Additionally, LCV, Climate Power, and NRDC hosted a pre-gavel reception with climate champions to celebrate the historic progress of the Biden-Harris administration and the need for continued progress for our climate and our communities.
Later in the week, LCV state affiliate Illinois Environmental Council hosted a press conference with Representative Sean Casten, Ali Zaidi, Elevate, an organization working to ensure more people have access to clean and affordable power, water, heating, and cooling in their homes, and North Lawndale homeowner Tekuila McGee, who was able to utilize resources from the historic Inflation Reduction Act and the Biden-Harris administration’s clean energy plan to electrify her home and save money on utilities while being part of the climate solution. See a full recording of the event HERE.
Lastly, new climate polling was released at a briefing by LCV Victory Fund and Climate Power, EDF Action, NRDC Action Fund, and Global Strategy Group. Key findings show that climate and energy are winning issues for Democrats, especially with the swing voters who will decide the 2024 elections. Voters increasingly see climate change as a major problem, want to see strong action on climate, reject the false choice between the environment and the economy, and strongly support stronger environmental regulations.
